Will AI Make Life Less Meaningful? Optimism Depends on Humans Keeping Control

🤖 Will artificial intelligence rob life of its meaning?

A recent study conducted a public opinion survey that revealed a split in American society over the impact of artificial intelligence on the value and meaning of life. The variation in optimism mainly depends on how much people believe they can control this technology.

🤖 Artificial intelligence between memory and anxiety

In recent days, OpenAI announced an artificial intelligence model capable of solving hundreds of complex mathematical problems that humans have long taken years to address. This development raised concern and posed existential questions about the future of human roles in various fields, especially in scientific and intellectual fields.

However, the psychological effects of this progress have not received the same level of attention. The issue goes beyond mere technical benefit or cost, reaching the extent to which artificial intelligence affects people’s sense of meaning in their lives and their feeling of importance. Human beings are creatures that seek purpose and goals, and the sense of meaning is considered one of the fundamental pillars of mental health and mental strength.

🤖 The meaning of life and artificial intelligence: what is the relationship?

Living a meaningful life requires a person to invest themselves in their relationships, in their work, and in their creative projects. With artificial intelligence entering these areas increasingly, from writing software to generating art and solving complex problems, and even offering advice, the central question emerges: How will this development affect our sense of self and the meaning of life?

🤖 Will artificial intelligence remain under human control?

The results of a survey involving more than two thousand Americans indicate that attitudes toward artificial intelligence are linked to the image of artificial intelligence that individuals hold. Is it seen as a tool under human control like electricity or the internet, enabling and supporting people, or as an independent entity capable of making its own decisions autonomously and independently?

  • About half of the participants see artificial intelligence as a new technology that could become self-governing and independent.
  • The other half consider it a normal technology that remains under human supervision and control.

This view largely determines whether people are optimistic or anxious about the extent to which artificial intelligence will affect the meaning of life.

🤖 Optimism or pessimism: judgment is tied to control

People who see artificial intelligence as a tool under human control are more optimistic about its ability to help people make their lives more meaningful. 63% of them believe that artificial intelligence will help them strengthen their relationships, their work, and their personal interests.

By contrast, pessimism prevails among those who see artificial intelligence as an independent entity; 73% of them believe it will reduce humans’ active participation in creating a meaningful life, which could lead to an erosion of the sense of importance and accomplishment.

🤖 Differences by age and gender

The survey noted that women and older people were more inclined to worry about the effects of artificial intelligence on the meaning of life, while men and young people were more divided in their opinions, reflecting a difference in the future outlook on this technology.

🤖 How do we deal with this challenge?

It is worth noting that human creativity and resilience have helped people adapt to successive waves of technological innovation throughout history. Although artificial intelligence carries unprecedented challenges, the same cognitive and human capabilities can be used to find new ways to contribute socially and meaningfully.

In the end, the decision about the amount of self-participation in people’s lives, whether through their relationships, their work, or their interests, remains in their hands. Technology, no matter how advanced it becomes, does not eliminate the active role of humans in creating the meaning of their own lives.
