🛠️ Smart upgrades for power tools using a $5 ESP32 board
Power tools have become an essential part of workshops and mechanical engineering, but they remain traditional in the way they work. Many craftsmen and hobbyists rely on these tools to complete their tasks quickly, yet the lack of intelligence and the ability to communicate smartly with the surrounding environment remains one of the challenges.
Recently, some engineers and hobbyists have managed to integrate inexpensive ESP32 boards with those tools, developing smart functions that add features that were not previously available, such as automatic start and stop, remote monitoring, and performance data reading.
🌐 Smart control of the dust collector using Wi-Fi
Dust collection in industrial workshops or woodworking shops is one of the challenges that affect work quality and the health of workers. A dust collector is usually operated manually, which means the hassle of moving around to turn it on and off.
One innovative solution relies on using several ESP32 units, with each one exchanging smart tasks such as:
- A relay control unit that receives commands over a Wi-Fi network to turn the dust collector on or off.
- A remote control unit equipped with a manual switch.
- A sensing unit that relies on a Hall Effect sensor to detect the operating status of other devices.
These components allow the dust collector to run automatically when the connected equipment is turned on, and they also use a small motor (RC hobby servo) to control air-channel valves, with an allowed delay to ensure the ducts are effectively cleaned of dust.
🔋 Reading wireless power tool battery data
Wireless power tool batteries are among the most important performance components, yet the information displayed about them is extremely limited. Small LED displays provide only a few general operating indicators.
However, by using an ESP32-C3 board alongside a regular ESP32, solutions have been developed that allow more detailed diagnostic data to be read for batteries such as Makita LXT batteries. While there is an opportunity to generalize this technique to other brands, current support focuses specifically on these batteries.
💨 A smart air-purification system in welding stations
In projects designed for small work environments such as welding stations, an ESP32-C3 board was used and supported by multiple sensors, including a photoelectric dust sensor, a volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor, and an OLED display.
The system measures air quality and controls a fan that extracts fumes and gases using sensor data, increasing the suction intensity automatically until the air quality reaches an acceptable level.
This experiment points to the possibility of designing small, smart air-purification systems for work environments, although these systems are not officially certified and their readings cannot be relied on as a safety standard.
⚙️ Making air compressors smarter with a digital display and smart monitoring
In the field of air-compressor use, a hobbyist engineer developed an ESP32-based control unit that manages turning the compressor on and off. The unit measures air pressure and switches the compressor on or off based on the measured values or the operating time.
Although modern compressors are equipped with similar smart functions, this project reflects the ability of embedded processing systems to perform precise control tasks at a low cost in technologically underdeveloped environments.
🔧 The possibilities and limitations of using ESP32 to develop power tools
While inexpensive ESP32 boards offer the ability to turn traditional power tools into smart systems, the other steps that include sensors, electric motors, and other components are associated with additional cost and effort.
Nevertheless, access to advanced control units such as ESP32 opens the door to integrating artificial intelligence and embedded systems into traditional hardware, in order to develop faster, safer, and more efficient work environments.
These projects fall within advanced computer engineering fields, especially embedded systems and AI acceleration on hardware, and they strengthen the trends of smart computer design.
