A recent study conducted in Finland indicates that spending 30 minutes in a sauna session temporarily enhances the movement of white blood cells, or what are known as white blood cells, within the blood. These cells play a key role in detecting and fighting pathogens that may threaten human health.

The study showed that a 30-minute sauna session increases the number of white blood cells circulating in the bloodstream, and this increase is not limited to one type but includes all common types of these cells.
White blood cells include a group of immune cells such as neutrophils and lymphocytes, both of which are vital in combating infection. Notably, the levels of these cells returned to normal rates within about half an hour after the sauna session ended.
Among the procedures taken by the study participants was cooling under a cold shower midway through the session, a common tradition in Finnish saunas that may help enhance the immune effect.

Researcher Ilkka Heinonen, a researcher at the University of Turku, explains that a sauna session may stimulate white blood cells to move out of their storage sites in the body’s tissues into the bloodstream. This temporary process allows these cells to move more freely in the blood and travel throughout the body, improving the body’s ability to detect foreign bodies and respond quickly to infection.
This temporary increase in white blood cells is similar to what happens during physical exercise, where bodily movement increases the number of these cells in the blood to improve immune surveillance.

The research team also examined the effect of sauna sessions on cytokines, molecules that play a role in coordinating immune system activity and regulating inflammation within the body.
Although changes in the levels of these molecules during the session were modest on average, individual responses were found to be clearly linked to the extent of the body temperature rise during the sauna period.
In commenting on these results, Professor Jari Laukkanen from the University of Eastern Finland stated that the relationship between rising temperature and immune responses expressed through cytokines opens a window into understanding how the body reacts to different thermal changes. No similar association was observed between changes in white blood cell counts and temperature increase.
🌱 Long-term effects and regular sauna use
Although a single sauna session clearly stimulates the immune system by increasing white blood cells, the long-term effects of this practice on human health remain unclear for now.
The study included 51 participants with an average age of 50 years, and focused on the immediate changes that followed a single sauna session.
Despite the well-known links between regular sauna use and a number of previously reported health benefits, current research does not allow us to conclude whether these temporary immune changes translate into lasting improvements in immune function or overall health.
