⚙️ Technical overview of the future of Meta’s virtual reality devices: glasses instead of headsets
Meta announced the launch of its new virtual reality (VR) device in the form of lightweight glasses, with a design completely different from traditional headsets such as Meta Quest or Vision Pro. These glasses feature a compact build that enhances ease of use and comfort, with advanced display technologies and strong performance delivered through a small external processing unit known as compute puck. This device was developed to provide an accessible and versatile VR experience between entertainment and work, with support for 5K MicroOLED resolution, and control technologies based on eye tracking and hand movement, while Meta aims to target new segments of VR users in a more elegant and less complex way.
🏗️ An innovative, lightweight design for virtual glasses
Meta has moved away in the design of its new glasses from the traditional form of large headsets, as the device adopts the shape of stylish black sunglasses, worn directly on the ears without the need for large securing straps around the head. This new design reduces the device’s weight to just 100 grams, compared with 515 grams for the Quest 3 headset, making it easier to wear for long periods.
The glasses carry the display portion and sensors, while powerful electronic components such as the processor and battery are placed inside a separate small unit attached to the user’s belt or pocket via a connected cable.
🔧 Technical components and the external processing unit
The small processing unit includes an advanced Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, with 12 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM), 128 gigabytes of internal storage, and a battery that provides up to three continuous hours of media playback.
An important battery feature is the ability to continue using the glasses while they are charging through the processing unit connected below the user, giving greater freedom during long usage periods.
🔌 Advanced display and eye and hand tracking technologies
Equipped with a 5K MicroOLED Infinite Display, the glasses offer a resolution of 2412 × 2288 pixels per eye and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, ensuring an exceptionally sharp and smooth visual experience. This technology supports detailed and realistic vision inside the virtual reality environment.
The glasses also include two front-facing color cameras that allow viewing the real world through color passthrough technology, meaning a realistic display of surrounding objects that supports the integration of augmented reality with virtual reality.
🌐 Eye control and hand gesture system
The glasses rely on two sets of eye-tracking cameras that monitor the user’s location and point of attention on the screen. The user can move between displayed elements simply by looking at them.
Hand gestures are used for control and navigation, with commands activated through the movement of the thumb touching the index finger, along with scrolling and control through thumb movement on the palm, assisted by six external cameras to track motion accurately and without the need for external controllers.
🏟️ Multiple entertainment and practical experiences on the new VR glasses
These glasses offer a large virtual screen ideal for fully immersive viewing, especially for enjoying live events and films. Meta has managed to integrate realistic and animated images tied to film content, such as showing clips from a James Cameron concert and events from the NBA in a VR180 format that provides a 180-degree field of view.
The company also collaborated with Disney and Industrial Light & Magic to produce a VR-enhanced cinematic experience called VR Enhanced Cinema, where the surrounding environment interacts with what is happening on screen through dynamic graphics, adding a layer of depth and interactivity.
🎮 Advanced gaming support and a new control experience
Games remain one of the main uses for the glasses, with a new mode for Beat Saber known as Flux, in which control is possible using only the hands, where the player’s hands represent energy fields that interact with virtual targets and obstacles.
More than 75 games will be available at launch of the glasses supporting hand control, alongside full support for Quest Store applications and gaming accessories such as the Touch Plus controller and Bluetooth controllers.
🔧 Work capabilities and the virtual desktop interface
The glasses can be wirelessly connected to computers via USB-C to provide additional screen space by displaying several parallel work windows inside the VR environment. This feature enhances user productivity in office settings or while on the move.
The glasses also provide a virtual keyboard and a touch controller that appear when placing the hands on a flat surface, making typing and interacting with applications easier, although typing speed is shorter compared with traditional keyboards.
💰 Price, launch date, and future direction
Meta is marketing its glasses at a price of 1299.99 dollars, and they are expected to be available in spring 2027, a price that sits between the relatively low-cost Quest 3 devices and Apple’s expensive flagship Vision Pro.
Although the new glasses device is not expected to radically transform the virtual reality landscape, Meta continues developing full VR devices alongside exploring the smaller and less complex device category represented by these glasses.
The market is also tracking vital trends among major tech companies toward developing extended reality (XR) and augmented reality (AR) glasses, indicating a shift in the understanding and use of wearable computing technology.
🌍 Conclusion: a renewed future for virtual reality in Meta’s glasses
Meta presents a fitting engineering and technical model for combining virtual reality with greater simplicity and interactivity through lightweight glasses with separate components. This revolution in design pushes toward devices that are more compatible with daily use and mobility, while maintaining performance quality and connecting them to immersive media and entertainment experiences that combine technology and practicality.
